Josh Selby Debut!

On Saturday December 18, 2010 the much anticipated debut of the highly recruited and talented G Josh Selby will finally happen. Some experts have Selby as the #1 recruit in the 2010 class. His eligibility has been in question because of his relationshipe with Robert “Bay” Frazier, a longtime family friend and adviser and the business manager for Carmelo Anthony. Selby was given a 9 game suspension for this relationship with Frazier and a small fine. He has been allowed to go to school and practice with the team for most of the year, so fans are hoping for a smooth transition into game play.

The Kansas Jayhawks have played without Selby so far, going 7-0 to start the year with one of the top ranked offenses and field goal shooting percentage teams in the NCAA. The last two games, though, have shown holes in the teams roster and playing style. KU needed a late run to pull away from Arizona in the championship game at the Las Vegas Invitational and they needed a questionable foul call with 0.7 seconds left to beat UCLA by one point. Hopes are that when Selby joins the roster that will give the team an explosive point guard that can create shots for himself as well as create opportunities for his teammates. He is prototype point guard, with good size and strength and very aggressive personality he will add a new scoring threat to the Jayhawks’ lineup that is missing at times.

The USC Trojans are only 5-4 so far on the season, but there still a strong Pac-10 team that is just coming off a win over #20 Texas. I wouldn’t expect Selby to start on his first game but I do expect Bill Self to play him with several different lineups to see which lineup works the best with him in the game. Duke has began the year looking far better than any other team and is the unanimous #1 team in the nation. A big reason for that is the standout play of freshman G Kyrie Irving and the Jayhawks are hoping for the same type of impact from Selby. Bill Self has said this is one of his most talented recruits he has ever recuited and is very excited to see him on the court. Players on the Kansas team have talked about how good he is. Kansas fans are looking for an early christmas present on December 18th with a big win over USC and a great performance from Josh Selby, so we will wait and see how it goes.
