Chargers slide past Chiefs

With their playoff spot already clinched this year, there wasn’t a lot on the line for the Kansas City Chiefs this past Sunday. KC took on the San Diego Chargers and only put two of their regular starters on the field.  The scenario was not the same for the Chargers who needed a lot to go their way this weekend in order to clinch their spot in the NFL playoffs. Fortunately for the Chargers the Miami Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens both lost on Sunday making their evening game against the Chiefs a win or go home situation.

The Chiefs started the game out solid with, former Missouri quarterback and Chiefs back up, Chase Daniel leading the team down field. Falling behind early things were not looking very promising for the Phillip Rivers and the Chargers. As the game went on the Chargers defense tightened up and put some pressure on Daniel allowing for the team to get back in the game. In the final seconds of regulation Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop missed a 41 yard field goal attempt which would have given them a win. In overtime the San Diego started with the ball first driving down the field for a successful field goal attempt. Chase Daniel and the Chiefs couldn’t retaliate leaving the game with a 27-24 loss. Although the game didnt go a smoothly as he had planned, Phillip Rivers was ecstatic to go home with a win and a 2013-2014 playoff berth.

What this ultimately means for the Chiefs is depth. Andy Reid should feel good about the way his backups took the field this Sunday and especially proud of backup quarterback Chase Daniel. With a second string offensive line on the field Daniel still managed to throw for 200 yards and a TD. Not having started a football game since his days at Missouri, Daniel should be happy with his performance and be looking forward to what is in store next in his career. The Chiefs will now take on the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in their first playoff game who they took a lost to 23-7 a week ago.
