Chiefs Defend Their AFC West Title

Last season the Kansas City Chiefs stunned the league by winning the AFC West Title. In what was suppose to be a re-building year, they made huge strides and won several big games. They also took advantage of the San Diego Chargers who threw several games away with silly mistakes. At the end of the year, however, the KC Chiefs were on top and playing a home playoff game. They were unable to take advantage of their home crowd cheering them on as they lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the first round. When you look at the season as a whole, it exceeded expectations and put high expectations for the Chiefs going into the 2011 season.

One of the big things that critics will comment on is how the Chiefs schedule played a big role in their success last season. They had one of the easiest schedules, but this year the tides have turned as they now have to play one of the hardest schedules. They have several teams on their schedule that were in the playoffs last season, including the defending Super Bowl Champs Green Bay Packers. The Chiefs have a young team so the fans in Kansas City only expect them to get better.

They added a big wide receiver through the draft to play of the other side of Dwayne Bowe, as well as going out and signing free agent Steve Breaston to play the slot receiver position. That was one of the big knocks on the Chiefs last year was the supporting cast of Dwayne Bowe, or the lack of that is. The offense was a good offense last season but that was mainly their top ranked running attack. Adding more weapons for Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Cassel can make the offense more diverse and even more dangerous and difficult to defend. The defense had some young stars shine last year and with defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel leading that side of the ball, the team expects another good season from them. The Chiefs went 10-6 last year on a weak schedule, if the team was able to get that record again this year then that would definitely be considered an improvement with the schedule they have this year.
