Sporting KC lost 2-0 to Houston on Sunday in the Eastern Conference Finals at LIVEStrong Park. The game was played in front of a record setting crowd in Kansas City at their new stadium LIVEStrong Park. Unfortunately for Kansas City fans their new and improved soccer team was unable to defeat Houston to advance to the MLS Championship game for the first time since 2007. The loss ends a 2011 season for Sporting Kansas City that saw the club ascend from worst to first in the Eastern Conference, earning the conference’s top seed courtesy of a run that included just three losses in a total of 27 matches to end the regular season. The team started the season with 10 straight away games while their brand new stadium was being finished. The club struggled to start the season as they traveled around the country and saw themselves at the bottom of the conference. But once the stadium was finished and the home games started to flow in for Sporting, the team found their stride.
A big reason for the success would be because the growing interest in Kansas City over soccer and the MLS. There was a lot of buzz in Kansas City over the new team name and logo as well as the new soccer specific stadium which created a much better environment for the games. There were several sell out crowds that enjoyed Sporting KC games this season. Sporting is one of the youngest teams in the MLS, too, so the future is bright in Kansas City. With a young talented team and a fan base that is growing, it seems to be good times ahead for the club.
