The Kansas Jayhawks were riding a long winning streak of impressive wins going into Big 12 play. The Jayhawks had been blowing teams out and winning against good competition. KU was starting Big 12 play at home in historic Allen Fieldhouse. A place they had won 30 straight games. KU hadn’t lost a conference opener since 1991-92 season. They were welcoming a mediocre Iowa State team that had beaten nobody. 39 minutes and 52 seconds into the game, KU found themselves down by 3. This was a game they were supposed to blow out Iowa State. Maybe Iowa State could create a competitive game in they were in Hilton Coliseum, but not in Allen Fieldhouse.
Then Ben Mclemore, maybe the best player KU has had since Paul Pierce, made a shot nobody saw coming. With 8 seconds left and down by 3, KU in-bounded the ball and ran the play from the 2008 National Title game. This time instead of the ball ending up in Mario Chalmers hands, they went to freshmen Ben Mclemore. He banked in the game tying 3 pointer. Sending the game into overtime, where KU dominated there way to their first Big 12 victory of the season. All is right again. KU’s home winning streak continues, they won the conference season opener for the 21st consecutive time and they are on their to a 9th consecutive Big 12 Title.
What did we learn from this game? KU needs to be more focused going into games they are supposed to win easily. They learned that in conference play, even if you are predicted to win big, you have to play great basketball to win. Iowa State is a team that can upset anybody. If you can go into Allen Fieldhouse and take the Jayhawks to overtime, then you are doing something right. The biggest thing we learned….. Ben Mclemore is a stud.
Mclemore has solidified himself as a lottery pick in this years NBA draft. With the way he’s progressing and where he is at, he could be the #1 pick in the draft. The kid is the best KU has had in awhile and possibly the best player Bill Self has ever coached. The bad news for KU fans is that this will be the only year they get to enjoy watching him play in Lawrence.
