It has been a rough season for Sporting KC.
Game after game, the team can’t seem to pick up points and with some teams holding up to three games in hand, it looks increasingly more difficult for Sporting to make the playoffs this season.
Not all hope is lost, however. With about half of the season left to play, Sporting seems to be playing a little bit better. The stretch of bad games always looked temporary anyway; there were no key injuries to cause the losses, just good players playing badly. And no one’s sure why.
Last weekend, Sporting claimed an impressive 2-0 win over FC Dallas, the Western Conference 2nd place team, at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday. Benny Feilhaber finally played up to last season’s level with a goal and an assist in the win.
This win highlights a hope that Sporting will be able to return to the way it played all of last season. Coming off a week-long break from MLS regular season play for Copa America, Sporting has the chance to return to the field with increased vigor.
The break, however, wasn’t a complete pause. Sporting defeated Minnesota United FC in the US Open Cup the weekend before last to advance to the fourth round of that tournament. Even though this MLS break hasn’t afforded Sporting a lot of rest, it feels like the team has boosted its confidence going into the second half of the season.
A win over FC Dallas was no small task. Dallas is clearly on another level from any team in the league this season. Sporting did catch a few lucky breaks, like a goal-line clearance that was easily over the line, but controlled the match thereafter.

There isn’t a ton of hope left for Sporting KC fans as far as excelling in the Western Conference. But there is plenty of hope that Sporting can build off this big win and play the way it should have been playing for the first half of the season.
Matt Besler and Graham Zusi will also soon be returning from international duty at the Copa America (the U.S. has two more games left, win or lose the semifinal). With both of them not playing an awful lot in Copa America, they each should be ready to go upon arrival to Sporting KC.
Sporting’s season continues with away games in Montreal and Houston and then the Columbus Crew on July 3 and NYCFC on July 10. Get your tickets to each of those games from Tickets For Less without any hidden fees!
