The Kansas City Royals’ top prospect Eric Hosmer made his major league debut last Friday May 6th, 2011. In the very first inning he played in, his glove was put to the test and he answered with a great play to turn a double play. That along makes him much better than any other 1st baseman the Royals’ have on their team. His first plate appearance he went down in the count 1-2 to one of the pitchers with the best curve balls in the game today. He showed his patience and was able to lay off some really good pitches just outside the zone and worked his way into a walk. He ended his debut 0-2 with two walks and a stolen base. His second game in the big leagues he got his first major league base hit in the 5th inning, which broke up a perfect game being pitched by Oakland’s McCarthy. Then a tied ball game in the bottom of the 9th he was intentionally walked, whether that was a strategic play or just out of respect for Hosmer’s hitting ability we don’t know. In his opening series in the big leagues he went 3-9 with 3 walks an RBI, run scored and a stolen base. Not bad and he was a foot away from hitting his first home run Sunday when a double he hit went off the top of the right field wall.

This is the first of the big prospects to be called up by the Royals’ this year but it won’t be the last. With the Royals’ having one of the worst starting rotations there are already demands in Kansas City for the club to bring up some of the young pitchers that are dominating the minors. The next big hitter will most likely be Mike Moustakas who is projected to be the starting 3rd baseman for the KC Royals’ by the end of the year. With the Royals’ having a surprise start to the year, we may see a lot more top prospects being moved up earlier than expected.
