The Kansas Jayhawks came into the 2011-2012 season an underdog to win another conference championship. Even though they have won the past 7 Big 12 Championships, people saw that Bill Self lost a lot of talent and was coming into the year with one of the least talented teams he has coached in awhile. Well, Bill has led the Jayhawks to a 13-3 start with his only loses being to #2 Kentucky, #6 Duke and Davidson. They have also beat #2 Ohio State this season at Allen Fieldhouse. KU has had a good start to the season, being ranked #10 in the country currently. That’s a pretty good start for a season most people were calling a rebuilding year.
The question is: Can KU defend their title and win an 8th straight Big 12 Title? Well the Jayhawks started the conference schedule off by defeating their in-state rival Kansas State by 18 points. They have followed that up with two road victories, which can never be a given in conference play, by an average of 23 points. Another 3-0 start to conference play for a Bill Self Kansas team. They play host to Iowa State this weekend and are expected to go into Big Monday against undefeated Baylor with a 4-0 conference record.
Big Monday against #4 Baylor is going to be a huge early season game in the Big 12. Baylor was a big favorite to win the Big 12 this season and take the title out of Lawrence for the first time in 7 years. This will be a good test for Bill Self’s inexperienced team and they will have the home field advantage of playing at Allen Fieldhouse. No matter who the team is, Allen Fieldhouse will equal the playing field if not give KU a big advantage.
