Last week the Kansas City Royals traded this years starting 3B Alberto Callaspo to the Los Angeles Angels for two young pitchers: Sean O’Sullivan and Will Smith. Why did the Royals make the move? The Royals are building toward the future and saw an opportunity to get a couple of young arms. While Alberto is only 27 and has played a decent 3B, the Royals have star prospect Mike Moustakas waiting down in Omaha. Moustakas should be the starting 3B in Kansas City starting in 2011. I personally like the trade. I don’t think Alberto Callaspo’s trade value will ever be any higher. I like the fact that the Royals got young prospects, with one being in the major leagues. Normally, the Royals end up with older minorleague players that are fringe prospects at best. Sean O’Sullivan who is 22, was placed immediately into the Royals starting rotation. Had the Royals rotation been a little better, I believe O’Sullivan would have started in Triple A. Will Smith who is 21, is a lefty and was sent to class A Wilmington. Smith had been as high as Triple A this year with the Angels. He has struggled recently and being only 21, the Royals did not want to rush him. Two young arms for Callaspo…..I think the upside was worth the risk.
