Sports fans in Kansas City are having the time of their lives as the city’s major sports team are having success. The greatest example of this can be described by what transpired at Truman Sports Complex in the matter 24 hours last Monday and Tuesday nights. Monday Night Football made it’s return to Kansas City and the Chiefs put on a show as they dominated the New England Patriots 41-14 for the whole nation to see. The very next evening the Kansas City Royals made their return to the postseason after the longest postseason drought of all teams in the four major sports in North America (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL). They squared off against the Oakland A’s in the American League Wildcard Game and played the most exciting postseason game in recent memory, winning in 12 innings.
Our beloved Kansas City Royals had gone 29 years without a postseason berth, but have made up for lost time winning games in exhilarating fashion. It all started with a winner take all wildcard game against the Oakland A’s. The game was a very back and forth affair with the Royals finding themselves down by 4 runs at one point late in the game. Somehow Royals banded together to tie the game sending it in to extra innings. Once in extra innings it was only a matter time before the Royals took the lead for the final time on a Salvador Perez single scoring Christian Colon closing the door on the A’s 9-8. That unpredictable and wild game kick started the Royals postseason run and as now propelled them to a 2-0 ALDS series lead over the Los Angeles Angels winning those games both on extra inning home runs by Moustakas and Hosmer. They are the first team in baseball history to win three consecutive extra inning postseason games and the first to win two consecutive postseason extra inning games by way of a home run in extras.
Across the parking lot the Kansas City Chiefs are sharing the limelight with the Royals as the teams haven’t shared an October in quite some time. After a terrible showing against the Tennessee Titans on opening day, the Chiefs have rebounded nicely and are now 2-2 surging towards a winning record for the first time this season. After that Titan loss the Chiefs went out to Denver and fought hard losing 24-17 with a chance to tie the game with 15 seconds left in the game in a game many thought the Chiefs would get blown out in. The resilience shown in that game seemed to change the tide for the Chiefs as now they have decisively beaten both the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots . Now they look towards the San Francisco 49ers as Alex Smith makes his return to the Bay Area for the first time since the 49ers traded him the Cheifs. Smith will be looking for some revenge against his former team, but most importantly a win so the Chiefs can go into their bye week with a winning record after surviving what looked to be a gauntlet of five games when the season began.
Between the Chiefs and Royals as well as Sporting KC winning the MLS Cup last year, there is no better time to be a Kansas City sports fan. Kansas City has become a sports mecca in the last week as all this success has drawn national attention. Soak it up Kansas City fans, we deserve it after all these years. It’s our turn now.
