The Kansas City Chiefs with a record of 5-8 fired head coach Todd Haley today. Last years coach of the year has had an up and down year with the lows being pretty low. The Chiefs started the season 0-3 with a couple blowout loses but followed that up with a 4 game winning streak. After the winning streak the Chiefs found themselves in first place in the division but then went on to lose 5 out of the next 6 games. The Chiefs game this past week was a blowout lose to NY Jets 37-10 and coach Todd Haley even got a personal foul against him on the sideline for talking to the refs. The decision was based on the whole season but the sideline incident and the blowout lose probably finalized the decision for owner Clark Hunt and GM Scott Pioli.
Romeo Crennel was named the interim coach. Crennel, the former Browns head coach, served as Haley’s defensive coordinator. Crennel will probably be one of the candidates to take over the head coaching position for good with his past history of being an NFL coach for the Cleveland Browns. The Chiefs are still mathematically in the playoff hunt but would need to win out, which would include breaking up the Packers undefeated season. They would also need the Denver Broncos to lose out, which is asking a lot since they are on a 6 game winning streak right now and riding the hype of Tim Tebow.
The Chiefs are one of two NFL teams that have fired their head coach so far this season (Jacksonville being the other) and rumor has that Miami will let their head coach go at the end of the season. That will make 3 teams in the hunt for head coaches and there has been no word on who the Chiefs have their sights set on. GM Scott Pioli has the task of finding the next coach and a lot rides on his decision. Pioli hired Haley when he came to Kansas City in 2009 but has already had to let Haley go. Pioli needs to find a coach that will succeed now otherwise the next big news conference could be to announce Scott Pioli’s replacement.
