After Kansas’ disappointing 2011 football season, head coach Turner Gill was let go. Kansas’ AD Zenger had his first big hire to make since taking the job in Lawrence. Most KU fans wanted Zenger to go out and hire former Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach. Leach decided to take the head coaching vacancy at Washington State, which most people declared a lesser job than the Kansas opening. KU fans started to worry about who they were going to get as their head coach because they knew it’s not the most attractive job opening. But then Zenger went out and stunned us all by hiring offensive coordinator Charlie Weis from Florida. Weis is well known for grooming Tom Brady at New England and being a part of 3 Super Bowl Championships. He also helped turn the Kansas City Chiefs offense around in 2010 and lead them to a surprising AFC West Championship.
The knock on Weis is that he failed as a Head Coach at Notre Dame and that this will be his 4th different job in 4 years. There are questions about his ability to be a head coach and the likely hood that he will stay coach for more than a year or two before moving to another position. One this is certain, however, the man can recruit. He consistently brought in top recruiting classes at Notre Dame and did have some success with those players. Recruiting is going to be more difficult at Kansas with their struggling program and everybody knowing they’re a basketball school. However, in the short time Weis has been at KU he has already brought in two top quarterbacks. Dayne Christ, a player Weis recruited at Notre Dame, has declared to transfer to Kansas for next season. Christ was one of the best quarterbacks in his recruiting class. Also, BYU’s Jake Heaps will also transfer to Kansas to play for coach Charlie Weis. Heaps will have to sit out a year before being eligible to play and Christ can play immediately because he has already completed his undergraduate at Notre Dame. Heaps was ranked Rivals.com’s No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2010.
Weis has a long way to go to bring KU football back to a strong program but he has made some great early moves. To see any KU games at Memorial Stadium visit www.ticketsforless.com or call their friendly staff at 913-685-3322 for the best selection and prices in Kansas football tickets.
