The Big Monday crew from ESPN came to Allen Field house for a much anticipated match up between #7 Kansas and undefeated #3 Baylor. Baylor was off to their best start in school history and was considered the favorite to win the Big 12 this year and end Kansas’ 7 year run. Thomas Robinson had 27 points and 14 rebounds, Tyshawn Taylor matched a career-high with 28 points and the seventh-ranked Jayhawks rolled to a 92-74 victory Monday night, ending the third-ranked Bears’ perfect start and proving once more that the road to the Big 12 title goes through Kansas.
Not very many experts were giving KU a chance to continue their Big 12 dominance this year, after losing the Morris twins and Josh Selby to the NBA. After only 5 conference games, Kansas has become the front runner to win the conference again. Baylor is still considered the most talented team in the league, but Kansas’ coach Bill Self is showing why he will be up for coach of the year again. Kansas has potentially the player of the year in Thomas Robinson, but the overall talent and depth of this team is far below the average for a Kansas team. Baylor will have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend as they take on #5 Missouri in Waco.
Kansas is in sole possession of first place in Big 12 with Baylor and Missouri right behind them. The winner of the Baylor vs. Missouri this weekend will be considered the biggest contender to upset KU this season. KU has yet to play Missouri and still have two match ups with them. They also have to play Baylor again and that time KU won’t have the Allen Field House magic on their side. It’s still very early in conference play and nothing has been settled yet. Yes, Kansas has rose to the top of the pack even when people didn’t expect it, but there is a long way to go. KU has no depth and all their starters are in rolls they have never been in before. Only time will tell if they can keep up their great play and not wear down.
