Racing fans rejoice.
The Sprint Cup NASCAR series is in Kansas City, Kansas and the Kansas Speedway this weekend for an under-the-lights spectacular only describable by those who’ve seen it in person.
Local favorites Clint Bowyer and Carl Edwards lead the charge in the GoBowling.com 400, which serves as the first of two races at the Speedway during the lengthy Sprint Cup series schedule.
Carl Edwards told reporters, Friday, that winning the race at Kansas Speedway is as important to him as the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400–the two biggest races on the circuit.
Qualifying and practice took place on Friday ahead of Saturday’s race, but should have little effect on what takes place on Saturday night, as the track will have a vastly different feel.
During the day Friday, temperatures reached 80 degrees, while the actual race will likely see temps in the mid-to-high 60’s, creating a completely different feel for drivers.
Interestingly, qualifying times don’t really translate to lap speeds during the race, which leaves it wide open for those in the groups with fast enough to win cars.
Last years’ winner and NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson put up speedy lap times during practice, but had engine troubles which cut into his time on the track.
Local favorite Bowyer will look to continue his improvement on an average finish of 25th so far this season. In recent races at Bristol and Talladega, Bowyer finished among the top 10, and with a race close to home and heart on Saturday, nothing would mean more than for Bowyer to see victory lane.
