The Kansas City Royals baseball team is off to a hot start to the 2011 MLB season. They are 8-4 and are tied for first in the AL Central standings. They have jumped up to #14 in the ESPN power rankings and have not lost a series yet this season. Only the two game series against the White Sox and Twins, which they split the two games, did the Royals not win the series. They won the first game of a 8 game home stretch in which they are predicted to win most of them.
Parts of that top rated farm system for the Royals’ is starting to show up in the majors. Some of the young arms are making great showings out of the bullpen including Crow, Collins, and Jeffress. Alex Gordon has started the year better than any year he’s had before and Billy Butler is hitting for average like normal. Offseason signings of Cabrera, Francour, and Treanor have worked out well for the Royals’ so far. The hitting has been solid so far and the aggressive base running is creating several more opportunities than the team is use to.
Coming in to the year the weak part of the team was suppose to be the starting pitching. To this point the starting pitching has been good, not great but better than they expected so far. The supposed ace of the rotation, Hochevar, has looked alright but nothing special. Francis has been the most consistent so far and Chen has thrown back to back strong outings. Davies has not looked good at all so far and we have yet to see who the Royals’ will put out there for the 5th spot of the rotation. This rotations is not a good one right now, there performing better than expected but you can’t expect that to last. The good news for Royals fans is that there are some very good starting pitching prospects in the minors getting close to being ready for the majors. Once those guys come up, with the hitting continuing to look good, the Royals could surprise a lot of people with their record this year.
