Sporting Kansas City has booked its place in the MLS postseason for the fourth consecutive year, beating the Chicago Fire on Friday night 2-0. The 2013 MLS Champions have not missed the playoffs since the club was re-branded in 2011 from the Kansas City Wizards.
It’s been a trying year for Sporting with many injuries and key players leaving on international team duties. In the latest MLS Injury report, four players are listed as out for the season and 1 being questionable. Of those five players, four were either starters or receiving a lot of playing time last year and at the start of the season. Most notably, Chance Meyers and Ike Opara were lost early on due to a torn left Achilles tendon and right ankle surgery, respectively.
Star players like Matt Besler and Graham Zusi have been in and out of Sporting’s lineup due to being consistent players for the U.S. Men’s National team in the World Cup during the summer and friendly matches from time to time. The duo have more appearances than anyone else on the USMNT in 2014, meaning Sporting has to fill their starting spots more often.
With the playoffs starting at the end of the month, it’s important Sporting KC has qualified early so they can rest players and make sure they are fully fit for when the important games roll around. Sporting will be looking to repeat their 2013 campaign by bringing another championship to Kansas City.
