Debut of Champions Classic

This will be the inaugural season with the Champions Classic to get the NCAA Men’s Basketball season underway. It wasn’t difficult coming up with a name for the three year event with the likes of Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan St. and Duke. All those programs are known for their historic basketball programs and National Championship they have won. In order to have an event with those programs in it, you must have the word champions in it somewhere. The first Champions Classic is set for Madison Square Garden in New York, with Duke facing Michigan State and Kentucky meeting Kansas on Nov. 15, 2011. Year 2 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta will see Michigan State vs. Kansas and Duke vs. Kentucky on Nov. 13, 2012. The third event, Nov. 12, 2013 at the United Center in Chicago, will have Michigan State playing Kentucky and Kansas playing Duke.

This event was put together to get fans excited for college basketball in mid-November when most people are still in football mode. What better way to do that then to have the biggest programs of all-time face each other to give fans a great game to watch. These teams almost are always in the top 25 and have some of the best individual talent in the country. This year three of the four teams are ranked in the Top 25 and Michigan St. is just outside (#2 Kentucky, #6 Duke, #11 Kansas). Many years, one of these teams is the favorite to win the National Championship and even if they’re not, they produce one or two first round picks.

This will be a great event to get fans excited for basketball in November. This is the time of year that football is getting real exciting, with teams making moves for the postseason and rivalry games so it will take a great event like the Champions Classic to take peoples focus away from that. This is a great step for college basketball to gain more fans this time of year, we are one day away from experiencing the first ever Champions Classic and the buzz about the games has already started.
