The Kansas City Royals have one series left against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium and then their 2012 season will be over. The Royals had higher expectations going into this season but have fallen short of them……again. The KC Royals weren’t expected to make the playoffs this season, although the Kansas City fans would have enjoyed that, but they were expected to be more competitive with their young talent. The big superstar prospects Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas were supposed to take a big step forward this season but have not been able to make the adjustments to the major league pitching. It didn’t help the Royals that their top catcher Salvador Perez and center fielder Lorenzo Cain were hurt for half the season.
The fielding and hitting under impressed this season but the pitching continued to be the big problem with this organization. Young pitcher Danny Duffy showed glimpses of being an ace but had to go under the knife with Tommy Jone Surgery. The Royals big acquisition in the off season was trading for pitcher Jonathon Sanchez, who the Royals released in the middle of the season because he had done so terrible for them. The Royals did acquire pitcher Jeremy Guthrie during the season and he has come in and taken over the ace position for the second half of the season. Overall, though, the pitching rotation has been dismal and one of the worst in the major leagues. The Royals will have to address that before next season and hope that the offensive production picks up in order to be contending for a division title next season. It seems like the young talent is there, if the Royals can develop that talent into big league success and get some help for their pitching rotation then the Kansas City Royals could be a surprise team in 2013.
